Lossiemouth to Hopeman Active Travel Route

Lossiemouth to Hopeman Active Travel Route

One of the key actions highlighted by the Trust’s original 5 year plan was the creation of a cycle path connecting Hopeman to Lossiemouth. This led to the formation of a sub-group comprised of representatives from the Trust, Lossiemouth Community Council, Moray Council, Hopeman Community Association, and landowners and residents of the local area. In order to secure funding, the path had to be more than just a “cycle path”: it had to be suitable for all non-motorised users (walkers, cyclists, horse riders, pushchairs, etc). The ideal route would run alongside the B9040 between Lossiemouth and Hopeman. However, because local landowners would not release land, a compromise was agreed to build the ATR in two phases. In phase one, a new path will be constructedalongside the B9040 as far as its junction with Covesea Road. Users can then get to Duffus via the Covesea Road and the “Green Road” (a Public Right of Way). In phase 2, it is hoped to construct a new path from the Covesea Road along the northern boundary of Gordonstoun School to Duffus where it would link with the existing Hopeman to Duffus ATR. Initial funding for feasibility and design has been provided by Sustrans, however in order to complete the ATR the Community will have to raise at least 30% of the expected cost. In rder to manage this substantial project in 2020, the group developed into the Laich of Moray Active Travel Routes SCIO.

So far, the group has mapped the landownership between Hopeman/Duffus and Lossiemouth; opened discussion with landowners about the route; surveyed local residents about the route and their experiences on the B9040 road that connects the communities; gained funding for and completed a modern feasibility study of the Hopeman to Lossiemouth section of the route; and started developing a design study of the proposed route, thanks to funding from Sustrans.
