Herb Planters at James Square

Basil

Basil Ocimum basilicum

Basil thrives in warm, sunny, dry climates and requires 6 hours of sun a day.

It requires well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and is very sensitive to frost so is often treated as an annual in cooler regions.

Basil is a good source of nutrients like vitamins A and K, calcium, magnesium, and iron.

Regularly pinch off the growing tips to encourage bushy growth and prevent flowering, which causes the leaves to turn bitter.

Cooking

A tender, aromatic culinary herb in the mint family, widely used in Italian, Thai, and Southeast Asian cuisines. Known for its sweet, spicy flavor and role in pesto. Best added near the end of cooking to preserve its delicate flavor. It thrives in pasta, tomato dishes, salads, and pesto. Pairs well with mozzarella, olive oil, garlic, and citrus, enhancing pizzas, soups, and even sweet desserts.

Medicinal

Traditionally used to treat stomach issues, acne, and migraines. Basil promotes heart health, supports digestion, lowers blood sugar, and may provide mental health benefits like reducing stress. It also has antimicrobial properties that may support immune function.
